NW Washington | My guess is that removing the plate might not do the trick. Pain associated with the weather is not uncommon, especially it you have some arthritis the joints.
I had an orthopedic surgeon tell me once that casts and holding limb immobile while healing a broken bone often causes problems in those joints later so maybe this is happening in your case.
But for sure, talk to the orthopedic doc and see what he or she says.
