judythe, Carl pretty much hit it with what he said. As for Vista, I would add you might find it costs a good deal more than you might think if you have Vista, then find out you have to upgrade a few other programs. If you still wanted to go to Vista, you might determine what software is on your existing system, then look around on the internet to see if that software is compatible, or if upgrades are even offered.

Edited to add: As far as your existing screen being weird in safe mode, that is what happens on any machine when in safe mode. Safe mode does not load many of the normal drivers, video is one of them. Booting in Safe mode only offers 640 x 480 resolution, but it should be in color since it uses a basic VGA driver.

One other thing is heat. If you have it setting on something where the bottom of the laptop is somewhat insulated, it may heat up causing problems with your system.

If you hook it to another monitor and it works, you might then consider a docking station. You can connect your laptop to a docking station (about a $100 if it's available) and use an external keyboard and mouse....or just use it with the external monitor.
