Perhaps a bad video card. The "safe mode" being large is not a symptom of that, but the "all pastel" and later you said "gray and white" colors perhaps are. Are you running the most current BIOS for that system?
Try hooking to an external monitor to see if the same thing happens. I imagine it will, but if it doesn't, you have a display going bad.
