Is the range of the RTK base line of sight only? What can I expect for a range?
This depends on the frequency of the radios. A 900mHz radio is essentially line of sight and has about a 12 mile range. A 450mHz radio can penetrate tree cover and even some hills. Range is about the same as 900.
