Cedar Rapids, Iowa | The free version of GPS runs at one frequency, called L1. There is another frequency for government use that was designed to be more accurate, known as L2, which basically just runs faster. The data in the L2 signal is encrypted, so we are unable to use that data. However, the carrier signal of the data is still usable to assist in determining the location.
Single frequency antennas use only the L1 signal. Dual frequency antennas use both L1 and L2. It costs more to build the hardware that can understand both frequencies, and figure out the carrier signal of L2 enough to make it better than L1 alone. | |
