| Wife personally prefers lava rock so that makes it my choice as well. As for a bug problem, there's "treated" mulch & there's "untreated". Not sure how long the "treated" will remain bug resistant but probably not for long. We switched to red lava rock approx 1994. I might have added 3-4 bags, if that much since. Before that we had mulch and had to add to it every year. Never have had a problem with the rock burning plants. Worst problem if a few pieces happen to get kicked out & hit by the mower. Problem solved by walking around the landscapng before mowing & kicking any back in. Rain & wind was always blowing the mulch out from around the shrubs. If doing over it would be rock again.
