If you want them to learn like real farmers, tell them to walk that 200k into the bank and see if they'll loan another 400 - 600 against it.

That way, they can get in over thier heads, be stressed, tied to their operation and forced to crank a buck to stay ahead of the auctioneer hammer.... Then they'd REALLY be farming ;)



EDIT: Seriously tho, put the money towards your highest ROI. that's the product - the animals. Buildings and machinery are nice, but they won't pay the bills. The cattle will.

Plastic feed troughs on the ground, an old bin for your corn, a few 5 gallon hi-tran pails to feed it, hay bales stacked for a wind break, double stand hot wire, 15-20 metal gates and a used head gate for handling, water tubs and a pump if you dont have piped access, used skid-steer to clean the manure and feed, and about 10 acres rented land can get you started. You're long labor and short capital. Don't blow it on trying to reduce your labor with equipment and buildings. That comes when you get more capital, in which case, see my opening comment LOL.
