NW Central Ohio | ..35 years ago when I was still in college, Ohio State was recommending an after wheat planting of Alfalfa. I can remember because we took a few afternoons and our forage class planted a field of alfalfa for the school's farm. I think it was in either mid or late August, we plowed for it...fitted it a couple times to get it smooth and then seeded it with a Brillion seeder. I think I might be more patient these days, because I know how much better some things come up in a stale seedbed environment. I might incorporate a few herbicides in those leveling passes, then wait till I get a good rain, and drill the alfalfa as soon as I got some good moisture. A light pass of glyphosate about 4-7 days after planting would catch a lot of sprouting weeds...and help keep the seeding clean till you get enough frost to clean out the weeds. | |
