southern MN | What they like about oats is a good grain crop, a good straw crop, you can haul some manure in late summer, and you can do a good seed bed for the alfalfa. Then there are less weed issues in fall seeding. Typically the oats blown over the combine sprouts up and makes a bit of a cover crop even if you didnt plan for one.
The negative is catching a fall rain, we are on a dry period here locally, no fall rains. Will be interesting to see how my neighbors field responds, he did the above this year and it was October before the rain came to sprout the alfalfa, only had a couple weeks before freeze. While we had early snow, it mostly blew away and very cold below zero freezing.
I guess anything we try in farming is so,e sort of an experiment with the weather pattern we get that particular year!
