WC MN | The problem is the shareholder is not most often the grower. I think 50% +/- ACSC shareholders are not growers. In my opinion the co-op is doing more to help the non-grower shareholders than the growers. The shareholder is responsible for growing the beets or paying their share of the companies over head (have heard $300-$500 per share) if I understand this correctly. Paying someone to plant them for you would be the lesser of 2 evils and may be the only choice. I would wager that there are shareholders that do not have the financial ability to pay the penalty. What are you going to do with a 75 year old lady that still owns 200 shares and would be on the hook for a $60,000-$100,000 penalty and has no money to pay it? Bankrupt her? Make her take out a loan if she can get one? Doubt ACSC really needs or wants any more negative press.
Really a tough situation
