I sometimes do what you are thinking. I have some cows on a relatives farm that I always buy two young bulls and use there - half brothers raised together if I can get them. I paid $3000.00 for both this year. I use them for three months then I usually fatten them a bit and get my money back selling them or butchering them. If you figure what it costs to keep them around for 9 months, plus the labor, it is cheaper sometimes to move on without them.

My favorite is to own a bull with a neighbor that breeds at a different time of the year but that can go sideways sometimes.
