Unless there's a drought, then your spring calving cows don't have any food to eat, and you have to use your winter hay in the summer. If they are fall calving that means you could get by with less grass for grazing, then it could be used for hay to feed them in the winter. But neither are fix because if you don't get any hay, then the fall calves are sunk.
I have a split herd. Last years fall calves averaged more pounds than spring, even with a very long, and very wet 6 month winter. :)
