I do believe it's importance is grossly overstated based on the visual appeal of a 'picket-fence' stand. Especially when you consider that at the higher populations we plant today...say 36,000/acre, in 30" rows, there isn't nearly the space to vary the drop by very much. It's not like it used to be when we planted 28,000. I think the comment above with a 9 rating of importance for even emergence and a 2 for spacing is a pretty good estimate.
