The idea of standardization is spectacular. It would definitely benefit industry as a whole. The problem with standardization relating to electronics is the standards process takes too long. By the time a standard actually becomes a standard, it is already outdated. That is why you see ISO 11783 in hardware, but the software often does not comply.

As an employee of an ag manufacturer, we had a developed software package to meet the standard (ISO 11783) for the product I work on. However, introducing an implement software package that meets the standard would be drastically "dumbing down" and defeaturing the product we already had on the market. After speaking to customers, they stated they would rather keep the propietary system with the enhanced features than be limited and be able to hook their implement to multiple tractors. Herein lies a major flaw in standardizing electronics.
