Subject: Re: Irrigation Power unit

Northeast Louisiana

I try to always idle down turbocharged power units, but we have a couple on pivots that shut down automatically when the pivot reaches a given point. One is a Deutz, and has well over 10,000 hours with no problems and no oil use. The other is a newer JD. It's not ideal, but it isn't the end of the world either since these engines are not working at near 100% load so they don't run very high temps.

On the oil use, what temp is your engine running? The reason I ask is that we have a Case engine out of a 2390 that we use as a power unit on a big rice well. It used to use a good bit of oil. Someone had taken out the thermostat and the engine was only running 130 degrees. We thought that was a good thing, but a mechanic friend of ours said that the temp was so low that the rings wouldn't seal off causing the oil use. Sure enough, a 180 degree thermostat and the oil use went way down.
