Subject: Took a steer in for processing this morning - pleasant surprise (pic)

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I took my one carry-over steer in for processing off of grazing standing corn this morning. The family and company cookout freezers are about empty and this one is for us.

Weighed him as loaded at 1545 lb. A pleasant surprise. This was the last calf born in 2010 and a bit light to process with his classmates in April 2011 so I held him over. He is a frame size 5.5 full Hereford out of one of my target 1200 lb class cows and Huth T21 bull.  A hand on the rump as he moved across the scale confirmed he is very solid.

He put on right at 4.1 lb/day since put on grazing corn Jan 7th. He is the center one in the picture below when they were munching on the hay after I moved the feeder behind advancing them in the corn.

I sure would have hated to take this animal to a sale barn and have him docked in price because he is not "black". FWIW.
