Why do they have to memorize them? Don't they have some way/tools to sort stuff? I would think the 911 addresses advanced that. (This is an honest question, really).

Yes. A lot of the mail comes in sorted in order, mostly first class small stuff. Any big stuff like papers and magazines still has to be sorted by hand before going out on the route. Going to the 911 system has made that part of the job harder because nothing is in order. Before it was Rural Route 1 box 160, etc. Now it is 345 CR 12, 1234 CR 15.5, 432 CR Aa, etc.

Personally I like Saturday delivery, but I hate government waste, so they need to do whatever they need to do to keep afloat. If I were in charge I would not deliver the junk mail for a discounted rate. Some stuff goes out for just a few pennies. They need to charge the same rate for every piece of mail. Say $.30 for everything under 1 oz. That includes Walmart circulars and post cards. It would cut down on the volume a lot I think.
