I would say for me grain farming on 1000 rented acres with no other income would not support my family, you have to be fully employed whether at home or for somebody else. There are too many variables to say what is right for you though.
I would like to add to this: Just because you quit an employer doesn't mean you have to stop working. You can't plant, harvest and watch cartoons. Figure out something you can do that generate income when you are not in the tractor. Then you can be a better farmer (because you are giving more time to it) and generating income when you have time. I have a friend that farms over 2,000 acres and in the winter he works as a tool and die man while he pays someone to clean out his grain bins. He does what he enjoys and feed his family.
To me, most could make it on 1,000 acres but it is your decision because you know your own person finacial situation. If you do it and it doesn't work out......you could always get a job? Only you can make it happen.
Sorry in advance for the bad grammer and mis-spellings :) |
