Took vacation to Mayan Riviera 3 years ago. Had no problem going off resort. Sign up for day excursions with representatives at your resort . They take good care of you and you will get to see a lot of the country side and get to know some of the locals that work as guides or tour leaders. If you don't go off resort , you will have no concept of local living conditions or customs. Just our experience... had a fun time!!!! John
