South Carolina | Where in Mexico. The landscape, people, problems, and hospitality is very different depending on where you are going. If you are in a resort area in or around Cancun I would not anticipate any issues.
Check exchange rates at several places, they can differ. The US dollar is still king though. I would also carry some traveler checks, and notify the banks and credit cards that you will be out of the country.
Visit some historical places, Tulum, the pyramids, etc.
Rent a car but stay safe, and let the hotel know where you will be.
