I just got done remodeling my 100 year old farm house. I blogged about the progress every week. The address is in my profile. You may find my last update very useful. It's about the lessons I learned and some advice. I would really recommend shopping local! Yes, the materials are more expensive but you actually know who the people are that work/own the store and when you need something you can just go back and the same people will be there to help. I did go to Menards to get some doors and it took me 3 hours to get service! I kept getting passed on to somebody else. It was very frustrating! The store I found most helpful was Lowe's. Also, it's very important to hire a contractor you feel comfortable working with and talking to. It's also nice to get one that has the same taste as you. I could go on and on but just go and read my blog. It will help you out!
