WC MN | Tried several practices last year.
1. Whisek disk followed by JD 2410 chisel plow
2. Whisek disk followed by DMI 730B
3. Whisek disk two times
4. DMI 730B followed by Wishek disk
5. JD 2410 chisel plow followed by Wishek disk
Number 3 buried the most residue and left the ground blackest, however, we did notice some ridging. This year we are going with number 1 and running the chisel plow about 2" deeper than the disk. The theory is the chisel plow will take out the tillage compaction layer the Wishek disk may create.
Have neighbors making two passes with the new CIH 870 ripper that looks good.
No matter what you choose the ground will be blackest if there is a little rain between passes.
None of these options bury as much residue as a moldboard plow or leave the ground as black. The down side of the plow is how un-level it leaves the field for spring.
We have found that two tillage passes as outlined above take about the same time and fuel as moldboard plowing.
Have a demo planned with a Sunflower 4530-19 for later in the week. | |
