I remember you posting that serial number break before, but I'm still confused.

When I look at the online CaseIH parts book for my tractors it gives three different listing for axles--

--the S-40 which is the single reduction planetary with the Eaton differential
--the Raba K598/10 or K598/20 or K598/30 (manufactured before serial number 3961)
--the Raba K598/60 or K598/70 (manufactured after serial number 3961)

My tractors are serial numbered 3236 and 3280 (I think they're 1984's), and they have the S-40 axle. They are not a Raba in any respect.

So I'm guessing at some point between 3280 and 3961 they switched from the S-40 and went to the Raba, and at 3961 they went to the beefier version.

I guess all I'm saying is that the pre-Raba S-40 axles have treated me well.

I don't know what to tell you, that list is a scan from my series 4 Panther operators manual ( a new printing from about 6-8 years ago). I was just glad that my 84 model KM325 is a few hunderd serial numbers into the group with the heavy axles.

I suspect the "lighter" axles like yours are plenty good until the tractor has too much tire and too much abuse
