Martinsville, Ohio | I like your question. Every new farm gets soil sampled first, hopefully before purchase or rental.
I use ammonium acetate soil extraction, costs about double of quicker Mehlich III but I understand the numbers a little better. This is Midwest Labs standard soil test but many labs will do it for you also.
I want to pull tissue on every field of those new farms for a few years until I get a handle on them. Yes I would like tissue and soil test from same spot. Trouble spots might get both pulled at same time but tissue test won't reveal much from sick crops.
Ideally I want one tissue sample per acre or per soil test if its a grid or a zone. I prefer lots of samples in a field and that is time and painstaking and labor intensive whether you do it yourself or hire it done, I figure that as a standard cost of production, not a frill.
I have found micro's aren't wasted money but yes they can be expensive but now are cheap compared to NPK.
I feel every farmer should do it once just to understand and grasp the process.
That is all I can think of right now.
