around here, nw illinois, the less you do to gumbo the better. always too wet to do deep tillage and you get big clods. just let it sit and hope it dries out then no till. used to burn off cornstalks in the spring before planting beans to allow for faster drying out. or just hit with soil finisher in the fall on bean stubble and then don't touch it in the spring, just plant right into that.
