NE MO & W IL
Common practice in most of the blackstick gumbo around me is to fall chisel, let it mellow a bit and level it off with a field cultivator or soil finisher. That way you can just plant in the spring without touching it. UAN is then sidedressed very soon after planting. We did that for several years but have just started applying calcium sulfate and no tilling the corn the last few years. Have been getting excellent stands. However this year is a complete distaster as we planted mid may and it literally stopped raining mid june other than a few tenths here and there. Corn is a complete loss. Ears have aborted to basically nothing. Hopefully I'll try it again next year. I can tell you one thing, there is absolutely no reason to rip or chisel it this year, mother nature has already done it for me. There are cracks 6 inches wide and 3 feet deep.
