The inner air filter says to replace annually, or with every 2 primary changes. We do the inner annually. The outher will be cleaned before hitting the field in the spring, again when it comes in for a bath after some use and happens to get caught in the rain leaving a mess, or sooner if needed. At the end of the spring, it will get cleaned again and put on a silage cart and cleaned at each oil change. In the fall, it will get a new air filter again before going on the grain cart and cleaned through the fall on the plow.

THe inner air filter spec is that it needs to be 96.5% efficient on ISO coarse dust at 12.5kPA restriction. The outer though is 99.98% efficient on the same test. cornfarmer is correct that the outer is the primary filter and the inner makes sure large particles of the filter or other inhaled items don't pass straight through if the outer fell apart/plugged. Agreed that every filter does a better job of filtering when it starts to trap material, but that trapped material also makes it harder to breathe, robbing power. The machines are designed to be capable of running with a clean, new filter and not being damaged. I like to keep them clean.
