EC Indiana | I think there is a large misconception about what the inner filters do. They are a safety filter. They have two jobs: They protect the engine from contamination that may occur while servicing the outer filter, and they are the last resort incase of outer filter failure. The inner filter actually does not trap as fine of particles as the outer.
That being said, filters are cheap insurance on $10-20k engines. I would rather run an engine 200 hours over on an oil change, than 2 hrs with dirty air. And yes, your parts man wants to sell you parts.
