Fayetteville, AR | My company here in Northwest Arkansas has been working on solving the phosphorous overload problems we are having in the Illinois River Watershed. We are currently trying to find partners in the Delmarva region that want the same type of solution that we are offering. What we do is expand the distance that litter can be economically hauled. We have a machine that compresses the litter into 3000 pound, shrink-wrapped bales that can be shipped on common flatbed carriers. The baling and wrapping of the litter does not allow leaching of nutrients into the water supply and it also halts the loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere. Once the litter is baled we can ship it up to 400 miles from the source. Here in Arkansas, we ship most of our product to the Mississippi River Delta region of Arkansas where cotton and rice producers can't get enough litter. The beauty of expanding the shipping distance is that you can normally find an area in that radius that is phosphorous DEFICIENT, thus eliminating the problem completely.
