JD Fanatic I am sorry, but you are mistaken. The 1st number in the model number is the width, the 2nd is the height (maximum). Therefore, a 558 will make (up to) a 5'tall and (always) a 5' wide bale. The 568 will make (up to) a 6'tall and (always) a 5'wide bale. You can ALWAYS make shorter (than 6') bales with the 568, but you can't make TALLER (than 5') bales with the 558. You may be thinking about the 468, which is the 4' wide baler. It is the most popular size in my area, because the D.O.T. has started acting ****** about farmers hauling 5x6 bales side by side (10') on a trailer.

The 4' wide bales will DEFINITELY fall over every so often, and they will roll downhill LIKE A WAGON WHEEL. They will go through gates, fences, barn sides, etc. like a knife through butter.

The BIGGEST reason IMHO to go with the 568 in this instance is that the bale kicker (push bar in JD sales lingo) is only available in the 6' tall (468 and 568) balers. In the 5' tall (458 and 558) baler's, the only worthwhile option is the hydraulic bale ramps. They work well on flat land, after the paint has worn off the inside of the bale chamber, but not NEARLY as well as the kickers, although the kicker can sometimes present it's own unique challenges in really rolling terrain (see above). JDF is def right about one thing, resale will be MUCH better with the more popular setup for your area.
