I remember seeing planter units mounted on a plow back in the late 50's. They had a tire mounted in front of the planter unit to pack the soil.
When Spring plowing we would drag a weighted harrow section to seal in the moisture and smooth the surface. I suppose you could plant right into it on the next pass.
