Saskatchewan | The Crop Insurance data is nice to see but there are some problems with using it for determining the best varieties. Basically, there are factors other than the variety affecting yield (unlike in a real scientific trial). For example, is the latest variety the highest yielding because it has the best genetics or because the farmers buying it tend to apply more fertilizer?
With a huge number of acres these affects are less significant. It's also nice to see many years of data. The cynic in me thinks that some seed companies didn't like their products looking bad and would rather pick and choose which trials they will publish. That's why they pulled out of the independent trials. | |
