Subject: RE: corn on corn spring tillage

Driftless SW Wisconsin

personally in heavy lee cty soils and stalks i would not run a finisher as the first pass in the spring - too much residue entrained in the top couple inches of seed zone which row cleaners can not remove.

i would also not strip full rate nh3 and plant over it in the spring - too risky.

my suggestion would be to spread the dry on top then strip in 1/3 of your n as liquid then side dress 2/3 of your n as ammonia. stripping in spring with a shank type machine however can still leave a slot....  do you have rtk where you could hold the planter a couple inches to the side of the liquid strip?  row cleaners and maybe one curvetine per row on the planter and you should be good to go.

with this type system i bet you can do a good job with maybe 0.7 units of n total per bu of target yield.

good luck.   jim at dawn
