Southeast Colorado | I spent a little time checking out the wheat fields today counting tillers. Phil says that in our area we need 500 to 650 heads per square yard for max yields. This wheat is only about a week into the green up stage, not sure technically what stage you would call it, but we are probably about 2 to 3 weeks before jointing. I count (depending on the field) anywhere from 500 to 800 tillers. Moisture conditions are good but in this area I can almost guarantee you there will be stressing periods between now and harvest. My question at this point is how many of these current tillers will become actual heads? Simultaneously should I be getting the top dress nitrogen on now or should I hold off, especially on the heavier tillered plants? I've struggled with growing good yielding wheat in past and would like to change my ways! Any advice? | |
