Things can be a bit different in different parts of the country but realize for my area if what you are doing is trying to manage fertility it's pretty clear, zone let's you do it with way less samples.

Go to Dave Franzen's webpage on the NDSU soil department and you can read a lot of the research yourself.

For you, I don't know, you don't even say better for what, your situation, the type of landscape, the variation in soil types or whatever. So it's pretty hard to speak to your situation. In my situation, doing fertility work for farmers in my area, it's not even a close question, zones.
