Subject: Re: Grid vs Zone

I did lots of grid sampling and I had trouble correlating good fertility and yields. Also, I was just having basic P, K and pH tested. I switched to a zone/soil type sampling which gives fewer samples, but more complete tests are usually done. So far I'm applying a lot more lime that I would have previously and only occasionally apply some potassium (we use hog manure as the main source of fertility). It's hard to say this type of sampling and fertilizer application is the only factor, but my yields have steadily improved. The more complete soil tests are a big plus no matter what type of sampling layout you use, but they are more expensive. The bottom line is that I can better correlate yields and soil chemistry.

thanks,

Pat
