| Hi Don, one of your challenges may have been within your statement "I had the boss flail the crowns as low as our poor old flail would allow this time of year". I don't know if that was necessary, but in most situations I have found that leaving residue tall and standing (rather than laying on the ground) can significantly reduce hairpinning. Was it an option to leave it standing? I have seen guys plant into some tall stuff and it seemed the JD single disc performs OK within these conditions.
