Wood ash was used to make "Pot Ash". water was leached through wood ashes and then evaporated to make KOH or Potassium Hydroxide(lye) which is extremely basic-the commercial product is the base used to make Grandma's Lye Soap.

Old ash piles around homestead yard sites are still unproductive after 50 years here in high K, high ph soils. Will shed water and are as puffy as feathers when dry.

Suspect there are a lot of other mineral effects as a lot of lignite coal was burned along with the scrub poplar.
