It has been that way for years and is only getting worse.

First job I had they hired a lot of people seasonally so that wasn't to hard to get into.

Second job took a bit longer but they were trying to hire for quite a few positions and the high up management must have put some pressure on them. Fast forward a few years and that same place struggled to hire new people since they dragged their feet so bad, quite a few applicants just gave up and went elsewhere. The better ones that got in all had a job they were at already and were just looking for something with more pay, and kind of stuck through the process. Some of the not-so-great ones apparently couldn't find, or keep, a job anywhere else and ended up being hired for a lack of competition... The rest had all given up!

In the second case it was off site management that caused so many problems in the hiring process, as our location didn't actually have an HR person at the time. Even after getting one the hiring was still below snail pace.
