Subject: RE: old iron

SW OH
We have bought old dead equipment at auctions for the steel frame work or a gearbox or other parts to build something out of. You may have to go back more than 50 years, but the technology in making steel has a lot to do with it. I have taken apart stuff made in the 40-50s that every bolt loosened and came apart with normal effort. An old plow from a fence row for example. The steel itself will still be in good shape.

Try the same with a plow from the 80s and the bolts will twist off or round the heads. Where 2 pieces are bolted together the metal may be structurally compromised. The steel industry has found ways to cheapen up their product over the years which is reflected in everything made from it.
