Subject: RE: old iron

I just watched a thing on the titanic, they think that there was low quality steel ordered for the hot pressed rivets, cost saving measure, and under stress the rivet heads would pop off. When the ship hit the iceberg they figure it just opened up a seem in the metal like a zipper. Sad thing, if they had used the steel they should have and that the designer called for, the ship may have still sunk, but it would have taken long enough to sink that the Carpathia would have made it there. Fun little known fact, the Carpathia Captain and engineer did permanent damage to the ships driveline trying to get to the Titanic ASAP.
