Need a little help settling an argument. Looking at 50+ year old machinery, NOT TRACTORS, that have survived and are still able to do what it was built to.
Has it survived because it was a good machine and looked after?
Or because it was considered a lousy machine when new and no one used it?
Discussion was sparked when talking about corn pickers, I say lots have survived because as soon as folks had another option for harvesting corn they took it, and the pickers sat.
I'd say its variable based on many factors.
MF combines here on the plains are an interesting case, still a few laying around, when people tolerated them and had dealers to keep them going, they sure cut alot of grain in their day. They did a fairly good job of combining, but Id argue far from a great designed machine. Had they went centered cab and rear engine, might have aged better.
