Central ND | Carlson we use to have like you, basically lived with them from Feb 1 to April 1. We have no pasture by the house and it can get very muddy in the spring so we switched to June 1 calving on pasture which is 7 miles away by themselves. In the last eight years our weaned percentage has ranged 92%-96%. I don't know calving percentage because there would be know way to make an accurate count. In those eight years we have lost 2 cows from calving, one from prolapse and one from backwards legs forward calf, found her with calf tail sticking out. One of the major downfalls is the calves end up being very flighty. Hey it works for us and I can argue our grain farming is a lot more on time and profitable because we are not wore out by the time spring work gets here and more timely getting in the field. What works for one guy might not work for the rest to each his own. It was very nerve racking the first year though. | |
