Another thing to consider when planting rye this late is the soil temperature going forward. We are north of you, but last year we planted rye on 10/29 into good soil moisture, it didn't emerge until this spring.

 We drilled some rye in a field on 9/21 this year, in parts of the field the rye is up and running and in other parts it has not emerged yet.
