For some people, stirring the pot just comes naturally. I would imagine that if this individual could come between you and the landowners, you'd be angry enough to sever the tie regardless. If you're of a mind to rent the ground again, crunch the numbers to make sure you're being fair to yourself. I don't think you owe the same allegiance to the children as you did their father. I think your only obligation is to be fair, not only to them but also to yourself.
