Amherst WI | What is wrong with hauling it to town in the fall and selling it on a December contract? The $.07 for the bag and $.12 for trucking later seems like a wash to me VS shipping $.19 to haul it out of the field in the fall. You are forgetting that if you store it your self and deer, coons, rats, mice, or ground hogs get into the bag its your money your losing. If you either sold your grain on a Dec contract or are storing it in town, and the Co-Op has a bin go bad you still get your check.
I have some friends that farm about 2,800 acres and have about 1,100 bushels of grain storage. (grain cart and 2 wagons) They say that they can't justify storing grain. The only time they don't like not having their own storage is when the elevator is full or has crappy hours. I agree with them and their idea. The only reason I would have on farm storage is if I were feeding out a lot of cattle or hogs and I needed it for feed. | |
