One thing I have noticed is if I'm planting corn into cereal rye and the rye looks healthy then the corn will be healthy. If the rye looks short of nutrition then you can bet that the corn will be short of nutrition.

Beans seem to be able to overcome this but that may be because we don't pay as much attention to bean nutrition.
