Subject: Combining speed in beans

I have a 1680 (cummins, long cleaning system) with a 25' 1020 head. The beans are tall and tough this year, but I've been watching neighbor with a 2388 and maybe a 30' head really rolling though a field. He may finish a 140acre field 8-9 hours today while we've been struggling to get 60-70 acres/day (9-12 hrs) done this year running 2-3 mph with a 3.9 mph max (any faster and the roping and banging sounds interfere with hearing the radio along with sending beans out the back and being hard on the machine ;-).

Anyway, I've been a little skeptical that the extra horsepower of the 2388 makes that big of difference if you can get the crop to feed in evenly, have new concaves and other threshing parts. Is 140+ acres/day in tough stemmed 50+ bpa beans pretty typical for the newer combines like the 2388? Another factor is that I'm in 15" rows and he is combining 30" rows - maybe all the difference in the world - what do you think? Maybe I answered my own dumb question...

Thanks

Pat
