WC MN | The last sentence says it all. Production agriculture is an extremely competitive endeavor. The reason rents are high is because of us. The reason inputs are high is because we are willing to pay what they ask. We are price takers at every level. Many landlords do have a clue, they know if you say no to what they want that they can probably just make a call or two and have the farm rented out to someone who either does not know their true cost of production or just needs more to feed their ego. Hell, there are several ads in our local paper from people looking for land to rent.
Regardless if corn is $1 or $8, the cost of production will gravitate to about a breakeven over time. Its just the way it is. We can blame whoever we want but we do most of this to ourselves. | |
