YES, the quest for perfect plant spacing is way overblown. Back when this craze really got going a independent agronomist I worked with told me spacing was far less important than what we were hearing. He honestly gave spacing a really low priority when it came to planting. This entire conversation started because I was giving him a hard time about planting test plots with a 900 cyclo air planter in my field after I had bought a new Deere. After the discussion I felt like I wasted my money.
